With major growth plans already underway, Sbarro is making a comeback after a decade of struggles.
Sbarro opened more than 100 new stores in 2022, the most ever. The company aims to go further this year.
Sbarro CEO David Karam told Restaurant Business Magazine that 120 new sites could open in 2023.
If all goes well, it might surpass the 100-plus locations it opened worldwide in 2022.
Sbarro would benefit from achieving its ambitious target as it recovers from a difficult decade.
Sbarro, founded in 1956 by Italian immigrants, is recognized for its New York-style slices in food court pizza shops.
It surpassed 1,000 locations in the 2000s. Due to the crisis, rising food prices, and declining mall traffic, many of its pizza restaurants had to file for bankruptcy in 2011.
After bankruptcy, Sbarro lost many restaurants. QSR Magazine reported 640 global sites a year earlier.
Karam told Restaurant Business that third-party delivery has helped the company recover in recent years.
Sbarro isn't the only big restaurant business with expansion plans. In June, Subway revealed plans to open 9,000 global restaurants.
