Guaranteed Income Supplement: Eligibility Changes, Payment Amount, and Updates

Age Requirement To be eligible for the GIS, you must be 65 years or older and already receiving the OAS pension.

Residency You must reside in Canada to receive GIS. Eligibility may continue if you temporarily leave Canada, but there are specific rules and conditions regarding the duration and reasons for your absence.

Income Thresholds The income thresholds for GIS eligibility have been adjusted to account for inflation and cost of living changes.

Exemptions and Adjustments Certain types of income may be partially or fully exempt when calculating your eligibility for GIS. 

Monthly Payments The GIS payments are made monthly and are intended to supplement your OAS pension. The amount you receive depends on your income and marital status.

Supplementary Benefits Additional supplementary benefits may be available for individuals with very low incomes, including the Allowance for the Survivor for those aged 60-64 whose spouse or partner has died.

Annual Renewal GIS benefits are renewed automatically each year based on your income tax return information.

Temporary Absence from Canada If you plan to leave Canada temporarily, you must inform Service Canada. You can receive GIS payments for up to six months while outside Canada

Income Reporting Ensure accurate reporting of your income, as underreporting or failing to report changes in your income can affect your GIS eligibility and payment amounts.

Application Process New applicants must complete the GIS application form and submit it along with the required documentation to Service Canada.
