No. 2 Iowa became the latest top 5 team to fall in an upset on Thursday.
It was a difficult game for defending Wooden Award winner Caitlin Clark as the Hawkeyes lost to unranked Kansas State. Good thing she had 24 points and 3 assists. The negative was her 6-of-32 shooting (2-of-16 from 3-point range) and four turnovers.
No other Iowa player scored 10+. Clark's 32 shots were 52% of Iowa's game total.
After a close first three quarters, Iowa led 48-42 with nine minutes left and 58-53 with 2:30 left in the fourth. Finally, Gabby Gregory and Ayoka Lee led the Wildcats to a 10-0 run.
Lee led Kansas State with 22 points, 9-of-14 shooting, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Gregory went 1-for-12 until the final three minutes, but the All-Big 12 first-teamer did well.
Iowa is the third top-5 team to tumble in 10 days. No. 1 and defending champion LSU dropped their season opener against Colorado, NC State beat UConn on Sunday, and No. 21 Baylor beat No. 4 Utah on Tuesday.
After losing to LSU in the national championship game last season, Clark's presence raised expectations for the Hawkeyes this season.
Its No. 2 and 3 scorers, Monika Czinano and McKenna Warnock, also graduated next season. On Thursday, Clark's teammates Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin went 1-of-7 for two points and four turnovers.
